How to Grow Feijoas - Planting and Care Guide
Growing and caring for the feijoa fruit
You must have stopped thoughtfully at least once in your life at a store counter, where small greenish, slightly elongated fruits were displayed. Feijoa - you read the price tag. What kind of fruit is this? We will try to tell you about the benefits they bring and the peculiarities of growing fruit.
The homeland of this sweet fruit is the South of America, namely the tropics. Before the outbreak of the War, he was brought to the Transcaucasus, where the plants took root perfectly. Plants from various regions of the Caucasus are sold in retail outlets in Russia.
Feijoa bears fruit in November-December, it is during these months that stores begin to vying with each other to offer green balls .
You may have seen such a trick from sellers: they put boxes next to the fruit with the inscriptions on how to eat the fruit properly and a detailed story about it.
Nevertheless, people are in no hurry to buy up exotic, maybe because homemade advertising does not affect people. And maybe the price of feijoa scares away. But once you try the fruit, you can no longer refuse to purchase it. Seemingly unremarkable green, slightly oblong ball. It is worth taking a bite off of it - it will leave an aftertaste of something pineapple and strawberry on the tongue. In other words, the taste of feijoa is simply unforgettable.
Already want to try it? In order to fully feel the beauty of the taste of the fruit, you need to purchase only ripe fruit. If you buy an unripe plant and try to eat it, it can lead to an upset stomach and an extremely sour taste in your mouth.
The difficulty in selling a plant is that this fruit is very soft when ripe. For this reason, it is very difficult to transport it, so you can often find unripe fruits on the shelves, which the sellers put up for the convenience of transportation.
But do not despair: you can buy unripe feijoa and just put them in a dark place. The fruit will ripen in the dark and become sweet. By the way, if fruits are artificially ripened, then they will not lose either their vitamins or beneficial qualities.
Why is the plant useful?
All of you have probably heard that seafood contains a huge amount of iodine. So in feijoa this substance is even more than in seafood. And iodine, as you know, is extremely beneficial for the thyroid gland. Endocrinologists even sometimes advise to drip a drop of iodine onto bread and eat such a sandwich. And if you don't mind instead of thisYou will eat feijoa during a pleasant procedure - the supply of iodine useful for the body will be replenished.
Where does iodine come from in feijoa? - you ask yourself a legitimate question. The fact is that in the homeland of the fruits, sea winds blow, which carry the compounds of this substance. Fruits simply absorb iodine and store it in themselves, and then transfer it to your body. For this reason, it is the feijoa that grows blown by the sea breezes that are truly valuable.
If you suffer from vitamin deficiency, your stomach or kidneys hurt, then feijoa will be extremely useful here.
By the way, fruits contain a large amount of sugars, for this reason it is useful to eat them for those who have a history of an unpleasant disease - atherosclerosis.
Also, these fruits contain substances such as vitamin C, pectin and fiber. In terms of the content of these substances, the fruit overtakes even black currants or strawberries.
Many people still argue: is it necessary to eat the peel of the plant? The fact is that the peel is very knits in taste. But, on the other hand, it is a source of catechins, leukoanthocyanins and biologically active substances. So, whether to eat the peel or not, think for yourself: if you want to recharge with vitamins, then it is advisable, of course, to eat the fruits along with the peel.
If you cannot find the strength to taste the tart, sour skin, then you can clean the plant from it, and brew the skin in tea. At the same time, antioxidants will not be lost from the peel. And from peeled fruits, you can prepare various dishes: pastries, salads, or meat sauces.
We will give you a very tasty and healthy recipe: take the fruits, peel them, crush them in a meat grinder and mix with 1/1 sugar, the resulting mixture will be extremely useful for the immune system.
Grow feijoa big and small
If we talk about growing feijoa fruits in the open field , let's say that plants reproduce by seeds or using cuttings.
Reproduction of feijoa by seed does not require a lot of labor, for this reason it can be called the most affordable way:
- To grow a plant in open ground, you need to take only ripe fruits that have been stored for a long time (it is important that they are not germinated);
- To get the seeds, you can carefully cut the fruit and squeeze out its jelly-like content, which contains a little from the seeds. Wash them in a weak manganese solution, removing the sticky contents;
- When the seeds are obtained, you will need to prepare the ground. To do this, you need to mix sand peat and leafy soil. Germinate seeds in shallow containers, but they must be planted to a depth of half a centimeter;
- When the seeds are planted, moisten the soil with a spray gun (you cannot use a watering can here, so that the earth does not erode). The sprouts will appear after 15 days, then just carefully transplant them in the opensoil.
If we talk about cuttings, it will retain the qualities of the progenitor plant.
But in this way, the plant is practically not propagated in the open field due to the fact that this is a rather laborious method. With this option, ten-centimeter cuttings with upper leaves are removed from the mother plant and planted in ceramic flowerpots with mixtures of sand and humus.
When the cuttings are planted, the soil must be watered with a manganese solution, and in order for the plant to take root, it is necessary to monitor the moisture of the earth: the soil must always be moist. To keep the ground moist, the flowerpot can be covered with cellophane or a glass jar.
If you do everything right, the cuttings will take root in two months, then they just need to be transplanted into the open ground.
Follow our rules and emerald green plants will give you fruits that are indescribable in their taste. Believe me, growing feijoa on your own is not that difficult.
