What is Urticaria (Hives) - EXPLAINED IN 3 MINUTES
The body's reaction to contact with an allergen through food, breathing, or contact with the skin or mucous membranes is called allergic urticaria. As a rule, it spreads to an area of the body in 30-60 minutes, disappears within three days in an acute form, but in a chronic one it can persist for several weeks and always returns if the allergen enters the body again.
The main symptoms of allergic urticaria are:
- on the skin - redness, swelling, itching, burning, small rash, blisters merging with each other;
- digestion - diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, hiccups, spasms;
- heart and blood vessels - arrhythmia, weak and / or increased pulse (more than 90 beats at rest), migraine-type headache;
- general - temperature, weakness, anxiety, insomnia.
Hives can be caused by a wide range of causes, from food and cosmetics to chemical or sunburn.
Sometimes, even with caution, you can get hives due to an accidental insect bite, collision with a jellyfish, frostbite or touching a stinging plant (nettle, ivy).
What to do if hives started
90% success in treating allergic urticaria depends on whether it is possible to identify the cause - a specific allergen, and eliminate it.
In case of acute skin allergies, the first thing to do is to exclude all foods except non-allergenic ones, and also to stop taking medications and using cosmetics (including soap, shower gel, shampoo and even a loofah).
Change into clean clothes made of natural cotton, free of traces and smell of washing powder and fabric softener, which can cause secondary allergic rash.
If possible, move to another room, and examine yours for the source of allergies. They can be insects, houseplants, an aquarium, an air freshener, fumes from plastic parts of the housing of household appliances.
It can also be a dirty air conditioner filter (in an unventilated room), excessive dry air, or, conversely, dampness and mold. It is possible that the allergy was triggered by particles of resins and metals that settle on furniture and wallpaper in a smoky room.
General cleaning of the premises is a prerequisite for the return of its occupant to a safe place.
Acute urticaria with an aggressive course requires taking antihistamines, which are prescribed by a doctor. Their task is to reduce the body's immune response to an allergen and prevent edema and fever, protect internal organs from enzymatic attack.
In critical cases, an aggressive reaction of the immune system can be accompanied by edema of the respiratory system and even cardiac arrest. In this case, we are no longer talking about urticaria, but about allergic shock.
If you see symptoms of shortness of breath, weak pulse or loss of consciousness in a patient, you should urgently call an ambulance - doctors will be able to stop the allergy with injections of special drugs, which is impossible to do at home.
An attack of chronic urticaria should be stopped with a laxative or enema. Cleansing the intestines makes it easier for the body to neutralize allergens and antibodies. Before visiting a doctor, you can wash your skin with cooling solutions with menthol, diphenhydramine, salicylic acid, vinegar (solution 1:20).
Allergic urticaria is well treated with herbal decoctions with antiallergic effect, which soothe, purify the blood and normalize metabolism. Lotions and washes cleanse and act as a local remedy for itching and swelling.
Folk remedies for urticaria:
- 1/2 cup of raspberry root decoction 4 times a day (50 g per 1 liter, boil for 15 minutes);
- 1/3 cup of yarrow broth 3 times a day before meals (1 tbsp. l. per glass of boiling water, leave for an hour);
- 30 drops of a mixture of valerian and hawthorn infusions (1: 1), taken before bed;
- 1 glass decoction of linden flowers and fragrant woodruff (1: 1) 2 times a day;
- lotions from a decoction of calendula and white lambs (2 tablespoons of each herb per 1/2 liter of water, boil for 2-3 minutes, cool, strain);
- washing the affected skin areas with wood lye 2-3 times a day (boil birch ash with boiling water, cool, strain).
Diet nutrition is the deciding factor
An allergic reaction like urticaria is caused by specific active substances contained in foods (proteins, fungi, molds, flavors and preservatives), as well as acid (in tomatoes, berries, citrus fruits) and spice enzymes.
At the same time, the use of certain other foods helps the body to control the production of excessive amounts of antibodies and soothes the digestion and the nervous system. Therefore, in the diet for allergic urticaria, not only prohibitions and restrictions should be present, but also the obligatory use of certain foods useful for allergy sufferers.
Acute urticaria diet excludes the following foods:
- meat, offal, eggs, animal fat;
- fish, fish roe, shrimp, mussels, squid;
- tomatoes, celery, potatoes, radishes, pumpkin, seaweed, mushrooms;
- spicy cheeses, marinsed cheese;
- nuts, berries, citrus;
- exotic fruits, all fruits are red;
- canned food, croutons, chips, hamburgers, instant soups;
- chocolate, flavored coffee (powdered cream, amaretto, caramel);
- spicy foods and spices (onion, garlic, cilantro, mint, mustard, pepper).
Low-allergenic and healthy products include:
- white cabbage and cauliflower, cucumbers, dill, lettuce;
- green fruits (apples, pears), bananas, sweet gooseberries;
- ghee, low-fat cottage cheese, kefir, fermented baked milk;
- sunflower, sesame oil;
- oatmeal, rice, bran bread.
With allergic urticaria, you should completely exclude the use of alcohol, cigarettes, strong coffee and tea. Thirst must be quenched with non-carbonated drinks, herbal decoctions, compotes, weak green tea.
When the acute allergy subsides, you can try to add prohibited foods in small quantities (30-50 g) one at a time in a few days and monitor the body's reaction. This scheme will allow you to establish with great accuracy what food you are allergic to.
Reducing the risk of allergies can be achieved through general improvement of the body, constant access to fresh air and moderate movement - an easy sport or at least home exercises.
In addition, such a preventive measure as dedusting of premises is also important: dust particles that accumulate on furniture and floors contain many bacteria, allergens and irritants of the immune system. Regular wet cleaning and airing of rooms will help maintain health.
As a preventive measure, contact with household chemicals should be limited or completely eliminated: for household cleaning, use natural remedies - baking soda, soap, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, iodine solution.
These simple products cleanse surfaces of dirt, disinfect and kill odors without aggressively affecting the respiratory system or irritating the skin.
If you still can't do without household chemicals, you need to protect yourself with a mask and gloves.
